Santa Cruz Guide Dog Puppies-In-Training

History and Statistics

Our volunteer group has raised or help raise 19 puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind since the group was formed in 2005. Right now our group has seven puppies in the puppy-raising stage and one in training (ie, in college). We've had three puppies (Evita, Lido and Dane) who made it all the way through training and are now working as guide dogs. Eight of the puppies did not complete the program for various reasons ranging from undesirable behavior to medical issues.

The puppy I helped raise (Ezra) was dropped after making it halfway through guide dog college. He is now living as a pet dog in the Bay area. My co-raiser and I went to visit him before he left college to go to his new family, and we discovered that he has grown into a big, goofy, playful dog who was more than happy to fetch all of the balls we tossed at him. Here are the photos we took that day.

Click on the links below to see photos of the puppies taken at home and at our training sessions. We meet twice a month with all of the puppies and puppy-raisers together for socialization and training practice.
